When we first learn to read, this method probably helps by sounding out unfamiliar words letter by letter, and then by syllables. But later, this learning trick can be counterproductive instead. Training can get rid of the subvocalizations.
Other bad habits include the internal dialogue. Instead of subvocalizing, the reading aloud is mental alone, but it still slows the reading down, Instead, course pupils are trained to turn off the continuous commentary and to concentrate on the whole passage, then mull it over. Avoiding regression or re-reading sections is another important factor. These reading acceleration methods can be part of a course, book, or self-help multimedia software.
